Brendan Hooley - Rider # 97
On Friday November 17th (my birthday!), and Saturday November 18th I will join hundreds of other individuals who will ride their bicycles or crew from Miami to Key West 165-miles. Our journey will be one filled with hope, filled with pride, and filled with the dream of a future free of AIDS.
What we do together on this ride makes a difference because 100% of the money donated goes directly back to the community. Thanks to the support of community partners, The SMART Ride can guarantee that every penny that I raise (with your help) will be given to AIDS Service Organizations that provide everything from health care to housing to social services in South Florida. Together we can make a real difference, can change the world right here, and help real people already affected, infected or at risk of HIV infection stay healthy.
Now, more than ever, your support of these programs is critical. With #TrumpCare making its way through congress, over 24 million people stand to lose access to affordable health care. So-called "faith-based" organizations are poised to have more freedom than ever before to deny compassion and care to people without recourse. And so I, along with my amazing team The Pork Pedalers, remain united by bacon to end AIDS.
We can't expect the kind of support from federal and state programs we grew used to under the previous administration. Instead, we must channel the words of Margaret Mead, who said "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has".
Together, we can do this. I hope you'll join us either as a generous supporter or as a courageous rider. And as thanks for your generosity, I'll send you a custom-made "Bacon Queen" commemorative pin for any donation over $25. Because you're pretty.
