michael breen - Rider # 498

I am not sure why I am doing this ride.   I think 165 miles is too far.

My wife did the ride in 2019,  I accompanied her on the trip, went to the rest stops to applaud and such.  I was proud, but happy to let her do her thing.    My niece has been involved in the medical team for more than 10 years.  I applaud that effort as well, and always impressed about how much charitable effort Laura offers.

As for me,  I was astounded at the number of riders, the fun they were having and wondered why.  Lots of people who seemed, just from looking at them, unlikely to consider riding 165 miles were coming in all of the rest stops and then going back out on the bike to ride more, even though there were perfectly good support vehicles to bring them to the Key West destination.

I do ride regularly, I got a new bike for COVID and probably ride about 50 miles a week, but right now all that means is that  I need to do three weeks of workouts in 2 days.

I guess I have decided (have I decided?)  to do this as a mental challenge, and I imagine that is true for nearly everyone doing this type of thing.   So, then the only other part of this narcissistic overview is to point out that the underlying charity is solid, and there are hundreds of non-riding  support team that enables all of the money raised actually goes to service.

If you really want to donate to this charity, I would recommend you sponsor Stephanie.  She will no doubt finish the ride and probably flip me off when I go by in the support vehicle.   If you are inclined to motivate/shame me into getting past the 50 mile mark then I will be grateful for your support.  In some sense, I am likely a good bet, because, I will be on the economic line to pay you back at whatever mile my willpower fails.  So, if you bid per mile, there is a good chance I will not make the full 165 miles.

Here is the text they suggest we use:

On Friday November 19th, and Saturday November 20th I will join hundreds of other individuals who will ride their bicycles or crew from Miami to Key West 165-miles. Our journey will be one filled with hope, filled with pride, and filled with the dream of a future free of AIDS. This year will mark the 18th year of The SMART Ride journey, I have set an ambitious goal to help raise more than the required $1250 because I believe what we do makes a difference (and because 100% of the money you donate will go back to the community).

The event guarantees that every penny that I raise (with your help) will be given to AIDS Service Organizations and directed to prevention, education and direct services. Together we can make a real difference, we can change the world, and help free future generations of living with HIV, while helping those already affected, infected or at risk today stay healthy.

This event is unlike other similar type events. It’s the second largest AIDS bicycle ride in the country and the only one of its size to guarantee that 100% of the funds raised will go back to the benefiting agencies. I hope you will consider joining me on this journey.

We share the words of Margaret Mead "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world, indeed; it is the only thing that ever has."
