Heather Ohms - Rider # 275
In November, 2020, I participated in my first SMART Ride, which is typically a 2-day, 165-mile annual bicycle ride from Miami to Key West that raises funds to support agencies serving those living with HIV and AIDS. As with countless other aspects of life in 2020, COVID-19 challenged the SMART Ride to reimagine itself, foregoing the usual very large group ride and inviting participants to independently engage in 165 of any activity of their choice while raising money for the cause. I chose a 3-day, 165-mile bike ride around Broward County for my activity. This year, in 2021, the SMART Ride is back in full force to take its 2-day group journey back to Key West by storm and I am more committed and excited than ever to do my part in helping to change the face of HIV and AIDS!
On Friday, November 19th and Saturday, November 20th, I will join hundreds of other individuals who will ride their bicycles, or crew, 165 miles from Miami to Key West. Our journey will be one filled with hope, pride, and the dream of a future free of AIDS. This year will mark the 18th year of The SMART Ride journey and I have a goal to raise $1250 because I believe what we do makes a difference.
This event is the second largest AIDS bicycle ride in the country and the only one of its size to guarantee that 100% of the funds raised will go back to the benefiting agencies. The benefiting agencies are AIDS Service Organizations providing prevention, education, and direct services to their communities. I hope you will consider supporting me on this journey by donating to my ride. Together, we can change the world by helping those affected by, or at risk of, HIV to stay healthy and by freeing future generations of the risk of HIV.
We share the words of Margaret Mead "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world, indeed; it is the only thing that ever has."
