Robert Shore - Crew # 2174
As many of you know, I have been working in the HIV field since 2014 here in Florida. Unfortunately, where I live and work (South Florida including Fort Lauderdale) we have the HIGHEST RATE of new HIV infections in the entire USA. I continue to work on educating people on prevention, such as one pill a day to prevent someone from getting HIV, as well as how treatment can keep someone living with HIV healthy and prevent transmission to others. It is not easy work and although many people think it is 'easy' to access care, for many it is a struggle with no insurance, being trangender, family not accepting who you feel you are, and friends not supporting personal choices to keep safe. We call it stigma and it is the single thing that keeps HIV going. I educate people everyday about ways to stay healthy but we need more organizations that can offer integrated services so EVERYONE can access care and prevention, and ultimately health!
On Friday November 15th, and Saturday November 16th I will join hundreds of other individuals who will ride their bicycles or crew from Miami to Key West - a 165-mile trip. Our journey will be one filled with hope, filled with pride, and filled with the dream of a future free of AIDS and new HIV diagnoses. This year will mark the 16th year of The SMART Ride journey, I have set an ambitious goal to help raise funds because I believe what we do makes a difference (and because 100% of the money you donate will go back to the community).
The event guarantees that EVERY PENNY that I raise (with your help) will be given to AIDS Service Organizations and directed to prevention, education and direct services. Together we can make a real difference, we can change the world, and help free future generations of living with HIV, while helping those already affected, living with, or at risk today stay healthy.
We can share the words of Margaret Mead "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has."
I ask that you dig deep... it is me asking for your help and if you know me then you know how committed I am to this cause. Chances are I have talked to you about PrEP or some other aspect of HIV, and maybe I've even helped you access PrEP or treatment and stay healthy.
Please help as much as you can.
