Kevin O'Connor - Rider # 20
On Friday November 17th, and Saturday November 18th I will join hundreds of other individuals who will ride their bicycles or provide assistance as crew members. We will ride 165 miles from from Miami to Key West. Our journey will be one filled with hope, filled with pride, and filled with the dream of a future free of AIDS. This year will mark my 5th year of participation and the 14th year of The SMART Ride journey.
I have set an ambitious goal to help raise $9500. My goal exceeds the $9,002 in donations made by my supporters for the 2016 ride.
100% of the money you donate will go back to the agencies and organizations in Florida. The event guarantees that every penny that I raise will be given to AIDS Service Organizations and directed to prevention, education and direct services. Together we can make a real difference, we can change the world, and help free future generations of living with HIV, while helping those already affected, infected or at risk today stay healthy.
I am excited to be riding with the "Give a Shift" team from Broward House. Broward House partners with my colleagues and me at Broward County Schools to provide education, prevention and treatment services to adolescents in our schools. In our efforts to lower HIV and STIs we work directly with students. The 13-18 age group is a demographic with increasing HIV and STI rates. We need to keep educating them.
SMART Ride has also provided funding this year for programs in Broward Schools that offer information events throughout the county to parents. These parent programs will provide an opportunity to learn more about Family Life and Human Sexuality programs in our schools and what parents can do to work with schools to increase awareness of HIV among adolescents and to seek solutions to lower the rates of new infections.
SMART Ride helps the work we do in Broward Schools to be possible. Their work is one reason why I ride.
